Sheila Copps was a Canadian Liberal Member of Parliament (and the first woman Deputy Prime Minister) in ’93, but resigned in 1996 after promising to do so during the ’93 campaign if the Liberal party did not — as they had assured Canadians they would — discontinue the previous government’s despised Goods and Services Tax (GST). Once in power, the Liberal bean counters beheld that cash cow and decided wallowing in its income was far preferable to keeping a key election promise.
Her resignation was short-lived; she ran in a ’96 by-election, was elected and was reinstated by then Prime Minister Chrétien.
